The Kittery Quarterly
July 2007

Sixth grade volunteers from Shapleigh Middle School worked recently to bring public awareness to storm drain runoff in the Spruce Creek watershed. This was a joint effort between the school and Spruce Creek Association. Students Michael Ross, Lindsey Clapp, Atencio Martin, Mariah McKenney, Orion Graves, Elieen Macomber, and Jeremy Edwards spray painted the message "Keep it Clean - Drains to Creek" with a yellow duckie next to storm drains at Kittery Trading Post and Tanger Outlet Mall.

Carolyn Hanson of SCA worked closely with the students to provide expertise and supplies. Safety equipment and brooms were lent by the Kittery Department of Public Works. Bob Adams of Kittery Trading Post gave students a tour of his new parking lot storm runoff management system. Judy Galle of Tanger provided refreshments, and SCA treated everyone to ice cream at Bob's Clam Hut. Black & Decker even supplied tools to clean our equipment. Deborah Clapp provided transportation. It was a community event!
